Since 2015, Ashley Treatment has been utilizing Peer Recovery Specialists in our inpatient program. While therapists and counselors offer valuable benefits, we’ve discovered that Certified Peer Recovery Specialists bring an additional set of advantages to our patients.
What is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist?
A Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) is an individual in long-term recovery with lived experience of recovery from a mental health condition or substance use disorder. They provide support to others who are experiencing the same challenges. To acquire this certification, they undergo a credentialing process that involves completing behavioral health peer-specific education encompassing advocacy, ethical responsibility, mentoring/education, and recovery/wellness domains.
What are the benefits of utilizing Certified Peer Recovery Specialists?
The role of a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) complements, but does not replace, the roles of therapists or counselors. Often, therapists and counselors do not incorporate their personal recovery experiences while offering support and assistance to patients. However, peers are encouraged to do so, which fosters more relatability and rapport. CPRS utilize their lived experience in recovery, along with their specific training, to provide connection and support to patients beyond the usual scope of a licensed clinician. Peers who share their lived experience also serve as models of what recovery can look like and help make it appealing for patients who may be hesitant about maintaining their sobriety.
Here is a list of some of the benefits that peer support may provide:
- Increased self-esteem and confidence: Interacting with peers who have similar experiences fosters a sense of belonging and validation, which can bolster self-esteem and confidence. Sharing successes and challenges in a supportive environment reinforces individuals’ belief in their ability to overcome obstacles.
- Increased sense of control: Peer support provides a platform for individuals to share strategies for coping with triggers and cravings, empowering them to take charge of their recovery journey. Through shared experiences and learning from others’ successes, individuals gain a greater sense of control over their thoughts, behaviors, and responses to challenges.
- Raised empowerment scores: Peer support encourages individuals to actively participate in decision-making regarding their recovery plans and goals. Feeling heard, understood, and supported by peers enhances feelings of empowerment, as individuals recognize their capacity to influence their own recovery process.
- Increased sense of hope and inspiration: Witnessing peers achieve milestones and overcome obstacles can instill hope and inspire individuals to persevere in their recovery journey. Connecting with others who have successfully navigated similar challenges provides tangible proof that recovery is possible, fostering optimism and motivation.
- Increased empathy and acceptance: Peer support cultivates a culture of empathy, understanding, and acceptance. By sharing their experiences without fear of judgment, individuals develop empathy for others facing similar struggles. Feeling accepted and understood by peers reduces feelings of isolation and promotes emotional healing.
- Decreased psychotic symptoms: Peer support can complement traditional treatment approaches by providing a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable discussing their experiences with psychotic symptoms. Connecting with peers who can relate to these experiences can reduce feelings of stigma and isolation, potentially alleviating symptoms through validation and shared coping strategies.
- Increased engagement in self-care and wellness: Peer support promotes a holistic approach to recovery by emphasizing the importance of self-care practices and wellness activities. Sharing tips and resources for maintaining physical, emotional, and mental well-being encourages individuals to prioritize their health and incorporate healthy habits into their daily routines.
- Increased social support and functioning: Peer support networks offer a sense of community and belonging, which is essential for social support and functioning. Building meaningful connections with peers who share common goals fosters a supportive environment where individuals can seek guidance, encouragement, and companionship throughout their recovery journey. These relationships extend beyond formal support groups, providing opportunities for social interaction and meaningful connections in everyday life.
How does Ashley utilize Certified Peer Recovery Specialists?
Here at Ashley, we are always exploring new ways to integrate peer support to Ashley patients/participants. Peer Recovery Specialists are employed throughout our continuum of care from inpatient to outpatient to The Clubhouse. We have multiple staff members at both outpatient and inpatient facilities who are in the process of obtaining their CPRS credentials or have completed the Recovery Coach Academy. We have been facilitating the Recovery Coach Academy since 2018, enabling staff to obtain their Recovery Coach certifications. Therefore, even if they are not certified peers, they are utilizing peer recovery skills in their interactions with patients.ย
Ashley is currently assigning a Peer Recovery Specialist to every patient at the inpatient level of care. Our unique approach consists of a Peer Recovery Specialist that serves as an integral member of each patient’s assigned treatment team, which also includes an assigned counselor and medical provider. The assigned treatment team works collaboratively to provide the most optimal care possible and develop an effective aftercare plan, combining peer support with clinical and medical treatment. We have also launched a brand new, grant funded service line that allows us to provide ongoing peer support services to alumni returning to certain areas. This is a service line we hope to expand to all alumni in the near future.ย
The utilization of Certified Peer Recovery Specialists (CPRS) at Ashley Treatment has proven to be invaluable in enhancing our patients’ recovery journeys. By incorporating peers with lived experiences into our treatment approach, we provide a unique level of support and understanding that complements traditional therapy and counseling. From fostering a sense of community to inspiring hope and empowerment, peer support plays a crucial role in promoting holistic wellness and sustained recovery. As we continue to innovate and expand our peer support services, we remain committed to providing comprehensive care that addresses the diverse needs of our patients.
