In Loving Memory of Karen G.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform the Ashley alumni of the passing of long-time employee and friend, Karen Gough.  Karen passed away Monday, the 24th of October in her home in Northeast, Maryland.  She gave almost 14 years of service to the mission of Ashley as a PSA and then as the evening PSA Supervisor.  In her time here at Ashley, she worked tirelessly to ensure that the patient community received the utmost care and compassion and she was often tasked with preventing patients from leaving treatment against clinical or medical advice after staff had left for the evening.  Her expertise and passion almost certainly helped save the lives of numerous individuals by convincing them to stay for “just one more night”.  Aside from being a member of the Ashley family, Karen was a mother to two wonderful daughters, as well as a beloved grandmother and a friend to many.  Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Rob’s treatment outreach experience brings professional expertise and personal commitment to providing exceptional care for your patients. Rob will focus on cultivating relationships in the Greater Baltimore region and serve much of Maryland.

Great Success For Our Inaugural Center City Dinner

On October 27 – over 300 friends joined Ashley and its Greater Philadelphia Leadership Council at the Union League in Center City for a fundraising dinner and presentation.  Major sponsors of the event included Horizon Services, The Law Firm of Jay Edelstein, and Pepper Hamilton Law.   On hand to address the issues of addiction in the 21st century were Ashley’s CEO Father Mark Hushen and Congressman Tom MacArthur and Don Norcross.  The evening was hosted by NBC10 News Anchor Rosemary Connors and raised significant funds for Ashley’s Scholarship programs.  Ashley’s Greater Philadelphia Leadership Council presented its first community service award to the Peters Family for forming the Council just 6 months ago.  Mark your calendars for next fall – Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the Union League!  Don’t miss it.

3rd Annual DC Gala

Ashley’s DC Leadership Council will host its third annual DC Gala on February 9, 2017 from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the DC Four Seasons Hotel.  Proceeds from this annual gathering benefit the Ashley Patient Treatment Scholarship Funds.  This year’s event will feature keynote speaker former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy of the Kennedy Forum and be hosted by emcee Susan Cheever, author of Drinking in America and the Biography of Bill Wilson.  This year’s Michael K. Deaver Community Service Award will be awarded to James P. Denvir (Jim), a champion of the recovery community and of Ashley Treatment. This event will sell out so make your plans early!

Patrick J. Kennedy 

Patrick J. Kennedy has dedicated his life to improving the lives of people around the world who are experiencing mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases.

During his 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving Rhode Island’s First Congressional District, Patrick fought to end discrimination against mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases. He is best known as the lead sponsor of the groundbreaking Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. The Parity Law requires insurance companies to treat mental health diseases including depression and addiction, the same as body diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Another one of Patrick’s greatest achievements was sharing his own narrative in The New York Times bestseller, A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey Through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction.

Susan Cheever

Susan Cheever is an acclaimed, best-selling author whose fifteen published books and dozens of essays have built on the brilliant legacy of her father, the novelist and short story writer John Cheever. Her latest book, about American history as seen through the lens of alcoholism, Drinking in America. Our Secret History, was released in October of 2015. She has written for many magazines and newspapers including The New Yorker, The New York Times and Newsday, ultimately winning a 1997 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news. She has also taught at Yale, Sarah Lawrence, Brown University, the New School and Bennington.
