Recovery Night at Camden Yards โ The Battle of the Beltways!
It was a sober evening at Oriole Park on Thursday, August 23rd as more than 250 alumni and friends of Ashley joined a crowd of 26,697 and watched the Oโs dismantle their regional rivals, the Washington Nationals in the Battle of the Beltways!
In what is sure to become an annual favorite, Ashley hosted the first Recovery Night at Camden Yards event, purchasing and selling out an entire section in the left field stands. Alumni & Development Director, Martha Meehan-Cohen, got the festivities rolling from the home-plate area before the first pitch, as the public address announcer acknowledged Ashleyโs presence at the game. Marthaโs smiling face appeared on the Jumbotron to a thunderous ovation!
Members of Ashleyโs leadership team were well-represented, as President & CEO Father Mark Hushen, COO Steve Kendrick, and CFO Al Germann were in attendance, along with a number of other staff members. Several Young Adult patients in Ashleyโs Extended Care program were given a little R & R and joined the group as well.
The Orioles offense got things moving in the right direction with 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning while starting pitcher Kevin Gausman shut down the Natโs bats with 6 solid shutout innings. The Oโs added 5 more runs by the time Gausman departed as they cruised to an easy 8 โ 2 victory in the second game of a 4-game set with their inter-league rival.
Recovery Night at Camden Yards was the brainchild of the Ashley Baltimore Leadership Council who believe in the importance of creating sober events to engage the burgeoning young-adult recovery community in the Baltimore area.
This particular game was selected at the urging of the Ashley DC Leadership Council who became aware of the plans and wasted no time pledging their own commitment. This was evidenced by the abundance of red Nationals jerseys peppering the crowd in Section 80. That group was as uncharacteristically silent as the Nationals offense on what turned out to be a spectacular summer evening in downtown Baltimore.
The Ashley leadership councils are comprised of dedicated community leaders, professionals, and other individuals, many of whom are grateful former patients or otherwise have a personal connection to Ashley. These committed volunteers advise and assist the organization in achieving its mission; focused either on a particular geographic region or a specific organizational mission.
Current leadership councils include the aforementioned Baltimore and Greater Washington DC groups, as well as groups in New York City, and Philadelphia. Mission-based Councils include the Women in Recovery Leadership Council, and the new Military Leadership Council.
For more information on the Ashley Leadership Councils, including membership opportunities, contact Martha Meehan-Cohen at 410-273-2205 or at mcohen@ashleytreatment.org.
Recovery Night at Camden Yards was just the first in a full schedule of Ashley events taking place late this summer and early fall. Other events include the 2nd Annual Womenโs Symposium, Mattโs 5K Race for Recovery kicking off the 2016 Homecoming Reunion, the 2016 Ashley Grad Cookout at The Irvine Center, The Lou Bantle Golf Classic, Philadelphia Center City Dinner event, SORโs, etc.ย Come out, get involved, and weโll see you there!
