FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
To open this fall, the Phoenix Recovery Academy will help teens earn diplomas while overcoming substance use disorder
Havre de Grace, Md. (February 19, 2020) —Ashley Addiction Treatment (Ashley), one of the world’s most recognizable and respected names in the substance use disorder treatment industry, today announced it has donated nearly 400 books to the Phoenix Foundation of Maryland, a nonprofit dedicated to providing safe educational and social options for people in recovery. The contribution will be used to build a library for the Phoenix Recovery Academy, the state’s only recovery high school for adolescents affected by alcoholism and drug addiction, in Frederick, Md.
“Our purpose at Ashley is to act as a beacon of hope for those who need it most and provide opportunities for people to live the life they want,” said David Nassef, president and CEO of Ashley. “We’re excited to collaborate with the Phoenix Foundation on this exciting new initiative to open a recovery school for youth—a need for many families throughout the state.”
Recent studies suggest that the most significant triggers for relapse in adolescents are related to attending school. Recovery high schools are secondary schools dedicated to helping reduce stress in teens who struggle with substance use disorder or dependency by providing specialized treatment and support while earning a secondary school diploma.
“By partnering with such a trusted and highly-respected treatment center like Ashley who shares our vision of providing people and families with as many opportunities as possible to succeed, we will be better equipped to meet the needs of our youth and improve outcomes,” said Ranya Baker, board of directors of Phoenix Foundation of Maryland. “We are overwhelmed and incredibly grateful for the Ashley team’s donation and support. All who participated have afforded our students a future love of literature; one of the many simple, yet vital, experiences the Academy can now offer our communities thanks to the generosity of Ashley.”
In addition to book contributions, Ashley is a proud supporter of the Phoenix Foundation of Maryland’s Partners of Hope campaign and will sponsor in the organization’s charity golf tournament to raise funds that will go towards helping future students enrolled at the school.
“We are constantly amazed by the amount of community support we have received for the Phoenix Recovery Academy including the generous donations from the Ashley team,” said Sean Nicholson, director of development at Phoenix Foundation of Maryland. “We are beyond thrilled to have Ashley join our cause and for their contribution that will lay the foundation for the school’s library to help our students further their education.”
Now in its final phase of development, the Phoenix Recovery Academy will open its doors in time for the fall 2020 school year at 117 E Church St.

ABOUT PHOENIX FOUNDATION OF MARYLAND
In the Spring of 2018–inspired by the endless tragedies in their community and the films ANONYMOUS PEOPLE and GENERATION FOUND–a group of residents in Frederick, Maryland recognized the need for safe educational and social options for young people beginning their journey in recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders. Investigating the need for recovery education and alternative peer groups in the Frederick area, the group found that there were no schools that offered safe harbor to protect a recovery lifestyle and provide a quality education and that very few substance abuse treatment programs for adolescents exist. Members of the group met with officials of the National Association for Recovery Schools and visited a recovery school in Philadelphia to help determine strategies and goals. By July 2018, the group had organized under the following vision: to establish recognized, effective and respected programs that provide recovery opportunities for the underserved populations in our community.
