What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

November 12, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Typical psychotherapy teaches the patient distract skills; and assumes problem solving when the patient calms down. However, our patients often avoid or tell themselves that the problem is gone when the emotions are not in crisis. Therefore, the issues role back into crisis immediately.

Long term treatment involves both teaching them to manage their own distress so that the crisis escalation happens slower and might be intervened with before they hit 100 and also teaching them how to calm down (de-escalate) faster.

The goal is for a patient to be able to enter the building starting out under 75, so they donโ€™t tip over the red line at the first challenge.

A full DBT program is comprehensive and provides wrap around services, vs. DBT -informed treatment.

Participants will:

โ— Develop an understanding of the emotional timeline

โ— Acquire skills to use with patients in a crisis situation

โ— Receive a broad overview of DBT

Jasmine Parlett, LCSW-C, C-DBT

Naomi Haberman, LCSW-C, C-DBT
