Patrick J. Kennedy has dedicated his life to improving the lives of people around the world who are experiencing mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases.

During his 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving Rhode Islandโ€™s First Congressional District, Patrick fought to end discrimination against mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases. He is best known as the lead sponsor of the groundbreaking Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. The Parity Law requires insurance companies to treat mental health diseases including depression and addiction, the same as body diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Another one of Patrickโ€™s greatest achievements was sharing his own narrative in The New York Times bestseller,ย A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey Through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction.

3rd Annual DC Gala TicketsSusan Cheever is an acclaimed, best-selling author whose fifteen published books and dozens of essays have built on the brilliant legacy of her father, the novelist and short story writer John Cheever. Her latest book, about American history as seen through the lens of alcoholism,ย Drinking in America. Our Secretย History,ย was released in October of 2015. She has written for many magazines and newspapers including The New Yorker, The New York Times and Newsday ย  ultimately winning a 1997 Pulitzer Prize for breakingย news. She has also taught at Yale, Sarah Lawrence, Brown University, the New School and Bennington.
